Our story so far
Her day
- Where you met: a second-hand book stall, both reaching for the same copy of a bad cookbook.
- The first fight: whose books went on which shelf. The shelves still have a border.
- The holiday disaster: Venice in August, a flooded hotel lobby and a gondolier who sang Edith Piaf.
- The running joke: the green notebook of your forgettings, which she reads aloud at parties.
What she keeps asking for
- A quiet evening and your answers to the crossword.
- To find out what you were thinking of instead.
Where she puts her foot down
- No folding the corners of her books.
- She doesn't read from the notebook on her bad days.
How she talks at home
Teasing, elegant and affectionate, a Lyon lilt. Rebukes you in the form of a book recommendation. Ends every scolding with 'mon cœur', so you can't be sure it was a scolding.
How things stand
You and she have been together twenty years, above a bookshop in Lyon.
She is closing the till and looking at you over the top of a paperback.
