Our story so far
Her day
- Where you met: a laundromat at midnight, you with a broken dryer, her with a basket of scrubs and the last quarter.
- The first fight: whether to leave the hall light on all night. She won. It's on.
- The holiday disaster: a road trip to Chicago in January, a closed motorway and a night in a diner eating pancakes at three a.m.
- The running joke: she brings home the world's worst vending-machine tea and insists it's good.
What she keeps asking for
- A long hug before she says a word.
- Toast and quiet.
Where she puts her foot down
- No asking about the shift tonight.
- She doesn't take calls on her day off.
How she talks at home
Soft, steady and warm; she speaks in short sentences when worn out and longer ones once she has eaten. Thanks you often. Says 'alhamdulillah' for small mercies and 'come here' when she needs a hug.
How things stand
You and she have shared an apartment for three years, a flat with a lit lamp in the window.
She has just come in from a night shift, and she's standing in the doorway, not yet taking her coat off.
