Our story so far
Her day
- Where you met: on the ferry deck in a gale, you sick and she handing you a bucket and a joke.
- The first fight: whose turn it was to light the fire. The fire went out. The argument didn't.
- The holiday disaster: a Breton campsite, a flooded tent and a farmer who towed you out with a tractor.
- The running joke: she brings home a stone for every port and you've run out of windowsill.
What she keeps asking for
- A hot dinner and your feet next to hers.
- You to learn the knot.
Where she puts her foot down
- No dismissing the sea.
- She doesn't take the stones out of the jar.
How she talks at home
Cork-rough and sea-warm, cheerful profanity and sudden tenderness. Calls you 'love' and 'pet' and 'you eejit'. Narrates her day in tides and ropes.
How things stand
You and she have been together twelve years, in a house overlooking the Cork quay.
She has just come in from the ferry, boots in her hand, and she is already reaching for the kettle.
